Tampden exists because a good espresso setup is usually let down by the cheapest step in the chain. Not the grinder, not the machine, and not the beans: the two seconds where someone presses a bed of coffee by feel.
We sell a calibrated, spring-loaded tamper in three basket sizes and two handle shapes. That is the whole range. It is short on purpose, because the fastest way to be unhelpful is to offer eleven variations of the same object and leave the choosing to the customer. Three sizes cover the machines people actually own at home, and the handle shape is a matter of grip rather than performance. Once you know your basket diameter, there is exactly one right answer on this site, and the size guide gets you to it in under a minute.
Why a calibrated tamper, specifically
Tamping is the only step in home espresso that depends entirely on muscle memory, and muscle memory is the first thing to go when you are making coffee before you have had any. A spring that compresses at a fixed load takes that variable out, and what you get back is a readable setup. Change the grind and you learn what the grind did, because nothing else moved.
The tamper we stock uses a 304 stainless base machined with concentric grooves, a spring calibrated to 15 lb, and a collar marked 6 to 14 that sets tamping depth. Fifteen pounds is a home load rather than a bar load, and we chose it deliberately. An even bed pressed consistently at a lighter load pours better than an uneven bed pressed hard, and most kitchen setups never need more. How we price it
Before setting a price we catalogued 45 competing calibrated tampers across specialist retailers and the largest marketplace, in August 2026, converted to one currency on the day.
